Fort Stanton, New Mexico

Building 4:  Power Plant & Laundry
Built: 1933

Some debate exists over the origin of this symbol on the back of the Power Plant building. Some stories state that the German internees built the building and placed this symbol in the concrete during construction. However, the building was constructed prior to the German internees arriving at Fort Stanton. The symbol is widely used by native Americans as a symbol of power. Many native Americans were involved with the construction of buildings at Fort Stanton, and it is more likely that this symbol was placed on the building because it is a power generation plant.

The current condition of the Power Plant interior. The boilers have been removed, but some other equipment still exists.
